The Nearctic species of Ditomyia Winnertz (Diptera: Ditomyiidae) are revised and four species are recognized: D. euzona Loew and D. potomaca Fisher from the eastern Nearctic and D. sohnsi n. sp. and D. elongata n. sp. from the western Nearctic. All species are figured and a key provided. Additionally, the first known Neotropical Ditomyia is described and the generic limits of Ditomyia discussed.

In all, 405 adult Diptera were caught, comprising 13 families and approximately 55 taxa, many of which were represented by one specimen each. These data provided indications, in some taxa, of vertical stratification, with some found only at ground level or only in the canopy.1 aHeath, Allen, C. G.1 aDerraik, José, G. Specimens of N. laffooni, previously known only from the type-locality (São Paulo, Brazil), are reported from Nova Teutônia, and Urubici, both in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The females of both Neotropical species of the genus are described in detail and the genitalia illustrated for the first time. These redescriptions provide further information on the position of these two species within the genus.
